The Truth About The Backstage Bitching.
Duncan James, 28, on his daughter, dating and what really goes on behind the scenes on Dancing On Ice.
So how's Dancing On Ice?
It's a challenge, but i love it. You rush to get the routine together, then suddenly it's Saturday Night. You put the lycra on and off you go!
Do you like lycra now?
Well, i don't look in the mirror and think, 'Ooh, i look sexy', but i like the dressing-up part of it. I'ts all about showmanship, and i love performing.
Have you been waxing your chest?
I don't have to! I'm still waiting for hairs to sprout. I'm like my mum - she's never shaved her legs because she's never had to. I only shave my face once a week.
What about all these stories of backstage bitching ?
I've heard so many ridiculous stories, and none are true. We just laugh about them. The whole Ulrika and Kay thing was nonsense. There was no friction between them - they got on really well. There's no rivalry between any of us. We just get our heads down and learn our routines. We go to the bar after the show and say well done to whoever's gone through and hard luck to whoever hasn't. It's great sportsmanship.
And you've got a new single coming out ?
Yes, i'm excited about releasing another record, but music isn't my whole life. I do a lot of presenting and acting, and there's the Dancing On Ice tour. I'll be dissapointed if the single flops, but, hey i tried!
Is your daughter, Tianie-Finn, a fan of the show ?
She's a huge fan of ice skating all of a sudden, which is sweet. The first week she came down to the studio, and now she watches it at home every Saturday night. She cheers for me and boos everyone else.
Do you get to see much of her these days ?
It's hard because i'm skating four hours a day, then when i'm not on the ice, i'm doing press and TV. Tianie and her mum Claire are in Manchester, but they do come down if, say, i can get Sunday off.
You and Claire are apart ?
Yes, but we have so much love for our daughter, and that's what's most important. Having a child out of a relationship used to be a taboo issue, but this is 2007, and things are more liberal now.
Ever thought of getting back together ?
We don't have that kind of relationship. We're good friends, but there isn't that spark, and we'd be getting back together again for the wrong reasons.
Would you like to have more children ?
I don't know. Certainly not at the moment. I'm enjoying watching Tianie grow up, and i'm glad i'm able to give her all the attention i can.
What rumour about youself would you most like to dispel ?
That i'm a womaniser. When i was in Blue, we let our hair down, but we were young and were enjoying our fame and fortune. I'm much older now.
Anyone in your life now ?
No, and i'm fine with that. I don't have time for a girlfriend. It wou;d be another hassel, another thing to commit to. I'm not cynical, but i'm not looking for love. I'm happy with my life. I haven't been on a date since last year, but that's because i haven't stopped working since we started traing for the show last November.
Do you get lonely ?
Not at all. When i was in Blue, that was five years when i had no time for myself. Now it's nice having a bit of 'me' time.
