- HUNDREDS of youngsters will enjoy a taste of the world of glitz and glamour at a super-posh do featuring singing sensation Simon Webbe.
The first RedCarpet evening, set up by youngsters for youngsters, will take place at the Concert Hall in Central Reading on Saturday, August 25.
Singer Simon, formerly of boy band Blue and now a solo star in his own right, and up-and-coming R’n’B and rap group n-dubz will perform at the event.
The youngsters are encouraged to arrive in a limousine dressed in their best gear and take a walk up the red carpet before enjoying three hours of entertainment. As well as the music, which will include many local acts, the event will also feature a speech by Reading police superintendent Steve Kirk about issues affecting youngsters such as crime and drug and alcohol abuse.
The event is being put together by not-for-profit organisation Diverzion, which teams up with schools across the borough to set up educational programmes focusing on issues affecting young people’s everyday lives.
Two companies have provided money for the event with Oracle Corporation of Thames Valley Business Park, donating £10,000 and Haslams estate agents of Friar Street £3,500.
Coordinator Gary Small said more than 50 youngsters were involved in putting together the evening and about 650 are expected to pack into the Concert Hall on the night.
“For the youngsters involved it’s a great opportunity to be able to see how an event like this is organised, negotiated and staged,” he said. “They will have the opportunity to be in the presence of the artists backstage and on stage.
“For those who will be attending on the night it will be an opportunity on their doorsteps to see more than one artist on one stage and experience the ambiance of a red carpet event, the dressing-up and the arrival in luxury cars.”
He founded Diverzion earlier this year with the aim of steering young people between 11 and 17 and from all backgrounds away from the dangers of crime, drugs, alcohol and bullying. “I grew up in Reading and went to school in Tilehurst,” Mr Small said. “I have children of my own and you do your best to raise them but then they reach the ripe old age, or so they think, of 15, 16 or 17, they want more responsibility and independence and you don’t know where they are.” Lizzy du uswfc | |
