BLUE star Antony Costa will greet bisexual pal Duncan James with open arms next time the boyband get together.
Antony
thinks Duncan will be a happier person now his sex secret is out - and
that should make Blue a better place four years after they split.
Duncan - who has a four-year-old daughter with an ex-girlfriend - last month admitted he has had gay flings.
Antony reckons that may even help the boys boost their gay following.
He said: "Duncan is my mate, regardless of who he is. I've known him for 12 years of my life and I've always got his back.
"Of course I knew about it and now it's out he can just be himself. It's his life and of course I still care about him."
Antony, 28, is making his Edinburgh Fringe debut this month in Bloodbath The Musical.
He
went into acting after he, Duncan, Simon Webbe and Lee Ryan split in
2005. Blue had notched up seven million album sales and hits such as
All Rise, One Love and their Elton John duet Sorry Seems To Be The
Hardest Word.
In June, Blue headlined Capital FM's Summertime
Ball at the Emirates Stadium in London and they are playing a private
gig at the weekend in Birmingham.
Antony hopes Blue will join Take That and Boyzone on the comeback trail by making a new album and touring next year.
He
said: "We are all in a good place at the moment. Being in a band means
you can't do everything you want. Now we can do our individual stuff
while keeping the band going.
"The boys will be up in Edinburgh to watch the show.We always support each other."
When Blue split four years ago it was Antony who most thought would fade into obscurity.
Lee
and Simon, the group's two main singers, were tipped to have solo
success while heart-throb Duncan was expected to have a smash singing
career or go into TV.
But Simon has been the only member to release a second solo album and he, Duncan and Antony have moved into acting.
Simon
has been in two films while Duncan appeared in the stage version of
Chicago and in December will star in theWest End production of Legally
Blonde The Musical.
Since 2006, Antony, who as a kid appeared
in Grange Hill and Steven Moffat's sitcom Chalk, has carved a steady
career in musicals. He hit TV screens in 2005's I'm A Celebrity... but
has also played the lead role of Mickey Johnstone in Blood Brothers,
toured the UK in Boogie Nights and filled the title role of Aladdin in
panto.
Antony will move to straight acting in November as a man who douses his prostitute girlfriend in petrol in Casualty.
Speaking at the Edinburgh digs which he'll call home for the next month, he said: "I have found the niche that I'm happy doing.
"I won't ever be another George Michael. It's very hard to sustain the musical side and be on top of your game.
"But I trained as an actor so I can always go back to that and I do enjoy it."
He
joined pop singers Marti Pellow and Darius who moved from the charts to
the stage but insists he's never got a part because of Blue.
He
said: "Bill Kenwright, who directed and produced Blood Brothers, didn't
even know who I was. My agent heard there was a role of Mickey going on
and sent in a picture, Bill liked the look of me, then I got a second
audition.
"There were 15 other lads wanting the part. I don't
want people to think I've got the part because I'm Antony from Blue. It
doesn't work like that.
"I want to be in the crowd and don't
want to be separated.Who am I? "Yes I was in Blue but that's not
enough. I'm not going to get jobs just because I've done that.
"Bill catapulted me into the West End stage and it helped me to be taken seriously as an actor."
While musicals are still about singing, Casualty will help him show he can actually act.
He said: "I can't wait for it to come out. It's going to show me in a different light.
"It
was strange doing straight acting at first. I was used to performing on
stage in Blue and doing musical theatre but with television you have to
talk really quietly.
"For the first couple of takes, I
struggled with that because on stage you have to do the opposite and
expose yourself more, while television you keep it within."
Even the audition room - an actor's most feared place - doesn't faze Antony.
He said: "I love that - hearing what other actors have done and what they are hoping to do.
"Blue got us where we all are today by giving us opportunities to pursue other things. But now I'm coming back to my roots."
Bloodbath
The Musical opened at the weekend at George Square. It has been
described as a quirky rock horror musical and features a serial killer
running amok.
Antony plays hearthrob Bud Carver and it also
stars Siobhan McCarthy, best known as Roison Connor in Bad Girls, and
Hollyoaks star Ciara Janson.
You may have thought a rich
former boyband star would be in a luxury suite of the Balmoral Hotel in
Edinburgh while the rest of the cast have to survive on beans and
toast. But he's sharing with two of the girls, who have only agreed to
do his washing.
Antony said: "Look mate, I'm the same as
everyone else and wouldn't want to be treated any differently than any
of the other cast. Why should I be treated differently.Who am I? I got
into a band and 18 and it did well for me."
Bloodbath finishes
about 11pm each night and doesn't run on a Tuesday night so Antony
plans to see Stephen K Amos, Ricky Gervais and musical Wolfboy.
He
said: "I'm looking forward to just walking around and enjoying some of
the street theatre and the madness of all the energy that's going on.
If people recognise me, that's great. If they don't, you are doing your
job wrong.
"I am seriously honoured to be making my Edinburgh Fringe debut.
"It's a huge thing and I might never get the chance to do it again so I'll lap up the experience."
Antony,
who has a five-year-old daughter Emilie, by ex-fiancée Lucy Bolster,
admits he's been nervous about how the audience would take to the show.
"There's so much wicked talent up here, it's making me really anxious,"
he said. "But I'm also excited.
"It's a new musical for a start. The Fringe run will be the first time it's been performed in front of an audience.
"One
of my main ambitions is to do an original cast album and see it in the
shops. Fingers crossed it might happen with this. It's a real buzz to
be in the original cast for this and put your own stamp on it."
