http://www.media.allriseforlee.com/videos/62/the-heavy-film-24The Heavy has the kind of cast list that would make people anyone
sit up and listen. From gangster veteran Vinnie Jones to living legend
Christopher Lee to top American totty Shannyn Sossamon, to a debut from
ex boy band member Lee Ryan and the lead role at the hands of ex-boxer
Gary Stretch. Impressive, right? And then there’s the story: A
hit-man is sent on a mission to kill the leader of the prime candidate
for prime minister who also happens to be his brother and the man who
sent him to prison. Sounds like a hit, right? Hmmm.
Gary Stretch plays Boots, a man sent to prison for killing the man
who was sleeping with his wife – his name comes from the baby boots he
carries around after his daughter was killed while he was in prison –
His brother Christian (overacted by Adrian Paul) is an MP who was also
the key witness for the prosecution that sent Boots down. Boots is
helped out of prison by rich gangster Anawalt (Stephen Rea) and now,
along with Rubin (played impressively by Lee Ryan), does the odd debt
collecting job for the gangster, until he gets hired to do his last
job: to kill Christian. Vinnie Jones plays a bent copper Dunn
determined to bring Boots down – we’re not really sure why apart from
the fact that Dunn has a scar on his face which he’s determined to get
Boots back for. It’s not the only part of the storyline that doesn’t
add up, and while some of the scenes work individually, as a whole they
just don’t mesh.
The script is mostly unnatural and the stories and motives mostly
unbelievable. Most of the acting seems strained and over the top with
one of the best, most natural performances coming from Lee Ryan.
Rather than trying to be a strong British gangster movie it feels more
like a British film trying to be an American Nicolas Cage-type action
film. It doesn’t really deliver on either.
