As part of boyband Blue, Antony Costa has always been known for his
looks as well as his voice - but after a few too many celebrity parties,
the weight had started to creep on, little by little. And it wasn't
until the 28-year-old watched himself on TV that he suddenly realised
just how far things had gone.
'It took me appearing on a TV show,' he reveals. 'Seeing myself, I
thought that I needed to do something about it. I thought I was happy in
myself but I wasn't. I used to go out with friends and blokes would
abuse me on the street, call me fat Greek boy. It does affect you, of
course, but I never did anything about it because I thought I was all
right.'
The singer says he had always struggled with his weight. 'I was the type
of person who looked at a biscuit and put weight on. It's not like I
ate rubbish or greasy food, I picked. I'd have a packet of crisps and a
sandwich, then think I'll have another sandwich because the last one was
an hour ago,' he explains.

'My
diet downfall was booze, going out for celebrity parties, drinking the
wine, the champagne. In my head I thought if I eat healthily, go to the
gym, but then I'd go out that night and get drunk.'
And Antony admits that he was tempted by the quick fix of fad diets to
shape up. 'I read a magazine and one of the supermodels was doing a
chocolate diet, where all you have is chocolate. I thought I'll try
that, until I spoke to my mum who said no, that defeats the object!'
Instead he credits his incredible two stone weight loss since January to
finding a diet to suit his personality type, his own dedication in
sticking to it, and a helping hand from a supplement, Appesat, which
contains seaweed extract and has been shown to help people feel full and
therefore eat less.
He started by taking a questionnaire on his
eating habits and discovering he was an '
Auto Eater', who thinks they're being healthy but
are actually consuming more calories than they realise.
'Now I've lost over two stone and it's amazing. I just feel so much
better in myself, people come up to me and say I look 10 years younger
which is a great compliment, because I'm nearly 30. I'm having the time
of my life and I wish I'd done it sooner rather than later.
'It's been hard work, I'm not going to deny, but it's been fun seeing
your body shape change completely. It's two, three, maybe four months
that will change your life forever.
'I cut out a lot of wheat as I'm wheat intolerant. I thought it was
rubbish so I was eating pasta, bread, toast, sandwiches, crisps but when
I changed my diet, my God I've seen a difference. I'm on soya milk now
too –a year ago, I'd have said soya milk's for idiots but now I'm
drinking it in my tea and coffee.
'I do still go out and might have a vodka and slimline tonic, I'm not
denying that, but then I drink fizzy water. I still enjoy myself. It
does change your life but it doesn't make you a recluse! I've cut out
sweets and chocolate completely and I don't miss it, hand on heart.
'I work out five days a week – half an hour cardio to warm the muscles
and burn a bit of fat, then free weights. Each day I focus on a
different area doing a lot of reps at 5-8kg. I don't lift anything too
heavy as I'll bulk out rather than tone up. I concentrate on my abs
every other day, or occasionally a chilled session swimming and some
press-ups at home. It's not about spending 15 hours in the gym.
'I'm the happiest I've been in nearly 10 years. People are coming up to
me for advice and I love it. The weight loss is a bit of an ice-breaker
with women – I've been single for three years, so if you know anyone!
But I want someone to like me for me, not because I've lost the weight.
After all if I put the weight back on, she might leave,' he laughs.
'It's all about dedication. But If I can do it, anyone can do it.'
