| Dunc: 'I'm so happy Suzy won!'
Hail Suzanne, Queen of the Ice!
Over the last three months we’ve been entertained every Sunday night by more celebs learning to dance on ice. Taught by the nation’s sweethearts Christopher Dean and Jayne Torville, judged by the likes of Jason Gardiner and Robin Cousins, with 10 million plus viewers tuning in each week to watch!
This year we’ve laughed at Greg Rusedski with his obsession to jump on ice and cringed at poor old Aggie simply trying to skate. We’ve swooned at male totty like Gareth Gates and pro skater Fred Palasak dressed in revealing Lycra outfits and been blown away by some incredible talent in the form of Suzanne Shaw and Chris Fountain.
Over the weeks we’ve watched celebs graciously bow out with a small bouquet of flowers, whilst Holly Willoughby stopped herself falling out in another area (which I must say has been another entertaining highlight each week!)
All in all this series has been the best yet, with the level of skating ability reaching a new high. I certainly had fond memories rekindled of doing the series last year and certain weeks, like props week and flying in the final, have brought a small tear to my eye (I use the word small though!).
However I must say I was very happy to be sat in front of the TV this year watching it all from the comfort of my own home. That was far preferable to bricking it each week waiting to perform with the dreaded feeling of "Am I gonna fall over and make a tit of myself in front of millions?" going through my head, and even more importantly “Am I gonna seriously hurt myself or my skating partner?”.
We’ve seen tears, tantrums and the occasional tiara this year, but I must say for me the final was just spot on.
It was always a kind of dead cert that Zaraah was finishing in third place, a very respectable place to finish, even if I do say so myself! I think she skated her flying routine beautifully. For me Zaraah has had the biggest story of the series, coming in week three, and staying until the final. She should be a very proud girl right now after being such a pleasure to watch.
So the final battle was really between Suzy and Chris. Thankfully Suzanne stepped up her game to outshine Chris completely and take home the trophy of 2008. She was just superb in every way. Her marks of straight 6.0's were completely deserved and I am so, so happy she won.
No disrespect to Chris as he has been the best celeb on ice ever. However I think as an ice hockey player and quite obviously someone who had skated before, he had an unfair advantage. Chris is an incredible dancer and skater and he makes a great runner up.
Suzanne showed what being a winner is all about. Her flying routine was simply stunning (unlike Chris'), but it is easier for the girls to fly and be graceful and elegant. Both Chris and myself last year looked cumbersome and not on point!
Both their Bolero routines were very, very good. I did feel Suzanne's routine was more fitting to the original Torville and Dean performance, whilst Chris's was far more modern day.
At the time of the final, I was presenting my new radio show on Capital Radio and thankfully my mic was down when Suzanne won as I gave out the biggest and loudest "YES"! I think I may have scared off all my listeners otherwise.
All in all Dancing On Ice this year has been a great series, with a great final show and a great winner.
It’s also been fantastic writing this blog each week. Thank you to everyone that has read it and big thanks to Sara Nathan and Colin Robertson for giving me the opportunity to do one. Let’s look forward to more "Dancing On Ice" next year!
Take care, Duncan x
