Lee Ryan has been talking exclusively to celebritain.co.uk about his new album, “Confessions”.
It’s been five years since Lee released his debut album, which he
didn’t co-write. “I like the songs ‘Army of Lovers’ and ‘Turn your car
around’ but I never wrote them, so i didn’t know what they meant.
That’s a hard thing to sell. To say to someone buy into this because I
want you to listen to what i’m saying – and then the next thing someone
asks you what it all means and i’m like, fuck knows”.
Writing the new album himself has meant Lee has been able to
determine a new direction. He says: “I’ve tried to go for that
‘George Michael’ kind of thing; a lot of diverse types of music that
all roll in to one. It’s taken me four years to write this album, so
there was a massive catalogue for me to choose from and I think i’ve
picked the
best”.
“I’m really proud of this album, I totally own it so I can stand
there proud and I can say that’s me, that’s exactly what I was thinking
about when I was writing it”.
So why is the album called ‘Confessions’? “I’m talking about what I
feel, and where i’ve been, and the kind of angst that i’ve been
thorugh… what’s happened to me”, says Lee. “The first time you saw me
as a solo artist, I didn’t really know what it meant. I didn’t know
how to sell myself as a solo artist because I was given songs by the
record label and was told to sing them… and I never wrote them.
It works in a group, it don’t work when you’re a solo artist”.
“Confessions” will be released in August, following the single “Secret Love” which is out next month.
